Excellent advice – things are very simialr in Australia! Your ideas will work just as well here!
I also believe people need education on money matters and then they will have even more confidence to take control of the financial issues in their life.
Financial Intelligence is not well taught in any schools and is really in dire need of support – so many students leave school with a complete lack of understranding of how to plan their life in this regard and never get ahead!

Rodney, great call on the bringing your own lunch. By bringing your lunch you may not only save money, but find yourself happier while at work also. By not going out constantly to lunch with co-workers you’ll avoid the inevitable gripe sessions that always seem to occur.

Tony, you’re so right. It’s amazing what you can save by cutting out incidental expenditure. For instance, take a packed lunch into work rather than going out and buying it. Those few bucks per day can add up to a lot by the end of the month. Smoking is another one.
It’s important to have some kind of budget, even if that’s just a rough idea of how much you can afford to spend on various items. Otherwise it’s easy to spend until your account is empty, or not have enough for essentials.
